Film

Angel's Egg

Angel’s Egg is at the top of the list because people really sleep on this one. It’s made by the same director that did Ghost in the Shell in 1995, but I honestly think this is even better. This film is totally all in on its artistic vision; it’s easily one of the best things I’ve ever watched. It’s also a very easy recommendation because it’s only an hour and 10 minutes long. A true 10/10. Turn this one on after midnight.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

You’ve no doubt heard of this one. Neon Genesis Evangelion is extremely popular and thats for good reason. It’s really that good. Probably the finest anime ever made, and shook up the industry too. If you ever wanna watch other anime this is still required viewing because of how often it’s referenced or alluded to. The characters are simply the best ever put in an anime, the mechs are cool, the story is unparalleled. NGE is simply the ultimate anime. Please note: After watching the series you also have to watch the film “End of Evangelion” for the final two episodes.

Gunbuster

Gunbuster is an anime that is from what fans now call the “golden age of OVAs” There was an era in the 80s and early 90s where the Japanese economy was doing very well and investment funding for anime original OVA projects was very easy to get and get a lot of. This resulted in a lot of anime OVAs of the era to just be absolutely amazing. Not based on any other media, Gunbuster is one such OVA; Gunbuster is by the same minds that later brought us Neon Genesis Evangelion, also directed by the great Anno, but this was 5 years earlier! Gunbuster is just pure fun from front to back, an 80s mecha anime with lots of drama and action, and it just looks gorgeous. The Mech designs, the key frame art, the character designs, the animation, all incredible. It’s coupled with a few extremely good insert songs and a fun story and all of this combines to make it something thats very easy for me to recommend to you. Gunbuster is only 6 short episodes, but about 15 or 20 years later they made Diebuster, a long awaited sequel. I also strongly recommend watching it after you finish Gunbuster.

Turn A Gundam

Turn A Gundam is a strange show. I know, dear reader, you’ve no doubt heard of the Mobile Suit Gundam series, but this one is a bit of a deep cut. Turn A Gundam is extremely unique compared to the rest of the series but also still very “core Gundam” in a lot of ways too. I’ve seen a lot of the Gundam stuff, and this is by far my favorite. It’s extremely unique in a few ways, the first thing you’ll notice is the setting. It’s a Gundam series set in early 1900s East Coast USA! If that wasn’t enough to interest you, the mech designs are also a serious departure from the usual fare of Gundam. Speaking of the art, the soundtrack is done by the legendary Yoko Kanno, whom you’ve, no doubt, heard the work of before. Speaking of the starpower of this production, the project was also helmed by Yoshiyuki Tomino; Renowned director of the original 1970s Gundam Series. This, however, plays into how weird the presentation is for this show. Like I said, the series has a very strange setting for a Gundam show, along with strange very different mech designs, but it’s got an outstanding soundtrack, huge budget, and quality late 90s production values. All of these things meld together to make something very odd. Tomino, in his age, and I guess tired of Gundam at this point, directs the entire production like it’s still a 70s anime. It’s got weird action cuts with portraits of the character’s faces overlayed on top the action scenes like a 70s show, some of the character designs and art are kinda 70s looking, but the production is also very 90s and modern for the time. You can see parts where Tomino and the rest of the staff kinda clashed and as a result, it’s this very odd mix of 70s style and late 90s early 2000s style. When you couple that with the setting being early 1900s America for a show about interplanetary mech wars, it makes for an extremely novel experience. Theres really not anything else like this one. The characters are phenomenal, the writing is very emotional and full of intrigue to keep your interested over it’s 50 episode run time. Check this one out, you won’t regret it.

Games

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Oft overshadowed by its big brother Skyrim, I think Oblivion is actually the better game of the two. Oblivion came at a special time in my life too. I was just the right age to really enjoy and understand this game when it came out, and I just went nuts playing it back then. Oblivion is full of fun and interesting ideas that keep the world exciting and fresh even as you play for a hundreds of hours. Its quests are always throwing you new ideas so they never feel like a chore. Oblivion’s world is beautiful and easy to spend a long time in, and its gameplay is stellar too. It all comes together to be the coolest fantasy game & my favorite game of all time.

Lunacid

Lunacid is a game I only played for the first time recently in 2024, but I quickly became very attached to it. Almost entirely made by a single person and pretty massive in scope when you consider this fact. Lunacid is drenched in an atmosphere that I just can’t get enough of. It’s got a vibe that is unlike anything else for me. I beg you, dear reader: Please play this game; step into a land of dream, a land bathed in lunar light…

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that will always be marred by its awful launch state, but you’ve heard that all before. And thats why I’m recommending it here. The game is actually great now that they’ve fixed all those early issues and in this final state it’s an extremely good game. Cyberpunk has a human and grounded story in a way that almost no other game I’ve played does, but it doesn’t suffer for how good its story is. Typically games with good writing are cutscene heavy (looking at you Yakuza) but Cyberpunk doesn’t have this issue. It also often lets the player have agency over the dialogue with options and other RPG stuff. Cyberpunk biggest highlight, however, is how great its characters are; Johnny Silverhand is hands down my favorite character ever put into a game. I love how dynamic he is…. like a real person. The way he’s written you really just hate him. “What an asshole!!” but as the story goes on you see the humanity in him, and you can understand him in a weird twisted way; even though he’s a total ass, you can see the contents of his heart aren’t all black. It all left a big impact on me, and after finishing the game it almost feels like Johnny was a real person, I’ve never had a game make me feel like that before. If you played it at launch and dropped it, please give it a second try.
